CREAF is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work for BLAUCAT (Blue carbon current status and action plan for Catalonia) with ref. 90056 and CLIMAGOV (Innovating governance for adaptation to global changes) with ref. 90057 both financed by Fons Climàtic of Generalitat de Catalunya and Community4Nature project (developed in the framework of the Interreg Euro-MED Programme Mission 2 on Protecting, Restoring, and Valorising the Natural Environment and Heritage), with ref. Euro-MED0300730 and co-funded by the European Union

The person selected will be inside the group of water and global change, supporting the work on governance for adaptation to climate change, aiming at improving research results to be integrated into decision-making processes and induce transformative adaptation of society by applying ecosystem based management practices.

The selected profile will be deployed mainly in the collaboration stablished between CREAF and EURECAT CRC Amposta related to the BlauCat Project to develop an action plan on blue carbon in Catalonia, assessing the current situation and the potential for mitigation and adaptation to climate change of coastal ecosystems (wetlands, lagoons, seaweed beds, etc.), also considering their potential for biodiversity recovery. The profile will collaborate with the Ecosystem Modelling Facility of CREAF as to produce the requiered modelling approaches.

The selected profile will also be occasionally involved CLIMAGOV project (Innovating governance for adaptation to global change), with ref. 90057 and funded by the Catalan Government Climate Fund managed by the Catalan Office for Climate Change between 2026 and 2030, developed in the same framework of collaboration stablished between CREAF and EURECAT CRC Amposta. This project is focused on the promotion of innovative governance for adaptation in Catalonia, and in support of the deployment of the Life eCOadapt50 project coordinated by DIBA in the Terres de l’Ebre living lab process (2025 – 2029).

A full-time contract is offered (37.5 hours per week) foreseen to start on January 2026. It will last at least until December 2029, with the possibility of extending it if required and if the budget allows. The offered salary is €32,802.11 gross per year (corresponding to category I4).

MAIN FUNCTIONS

  • BlauCat project management.

  • Assessment and mapping of the restoration potential of coastal ecosystems and agro-ecosystems in Catalonia based on their capacity to mitigate climate change.

  • Assessment of the potential for the provision of other ecosystem services by coastal systems in Catalonia, especially in relation to adaptation to the impacts of climate change (protection against the risk of erosion and flooding), as well as the potential for biodiversity recovery.

  • Development of a detailed action plan for the restoration of coastal ecosystems in Catalonia to address the climate crisis and the biodiversity crisis.

  • Support for networking and collaboration with local, regional, national and international public authorities and other key actors (Europe and the Mediterranean).

  • Support for the development, analysis, and promotion of strategies, plans and adaptation measures.

  • Support for the identification and analysis of natural resource management policies, pilot cases and examples of good practice, and the generation of tailored management options.

  • Support for the promotion and management of knowledge mobilization and transfer processes towards different actors, including the development of methodologies for the identification and evaluation of solutions, as well as the development of quantitative and semi-quantitative methodologies to give support for all these processes.

  • Technical support in public events, including travelling representing CREAF in its duties as a consortium partner.

  • Technical support for writing new project proposals.

  • Technical support for writing peer reviewed articles.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Master's and/or doctorate in Environmental Biology, Environmental Sciences, Biology or similar.

  • Experience in environmental modelling methods and applications.

  • Experience in data visualization techniques.

  • Experience in communicating scientific results to target audiences.

  • Accredited experience in the synthesis of conclusions, mail management, organization and work planning.

  • Basic knowledge of Political Ecology.

  • Experience in the analysis of environmental policies for adaptation to climate change, especially in the Mediterranean.

  • Accredited experience in scientific literature reviewing and synthesizing knowledge in a suitable format for transfer.

  • Accredited experience in writing peer reviewed articles.

  • Ability to coordinate groups and communicate with project partners.

  • Proficiency level of oral and written Catalan, Spanish and advanced level of English.

  • Fluency in presenting ideas and debating in public, as well as moderation skills.

  • Autonomy, flexibility, responsibility, and ability to work in a team.

ASESSABLE CONDITIONS

  • Experience in participating in international research groups, especially in the Mediterranean.

  • Basic knowledge of the Catalan, Spanish and European political and institutional framework for climate change and natural resource management.

  • Experience in stakeholder identification and involvement processes.

  • Peer-reviewed articles and publications on environmental science and climate change topics.

  • Proficiency in Italian, French or other languages.

  • Driving license.

  • Candidates with a certified disability of 33% or more will be prioritized, provided the disability is compatible with the position's responsibilities.

SELECTION PROCES AND CRITERIA

  1. Admission of candidates: Applicants must apply for the offer and attach the requested documentation, a curriculum vitae in English and a cover letter (maximum 500 words, until December 5th, 2025.   2. Pre-selection: assessment of compliance with the minimum requirements of the job offer.

  3. Selection: evaluation of the pre-selected candidates through scoring based on objective criteria, interviews with a shortlist of candidates, and a proposed exercise.

  4. Final decision: if a suitable candidate is identified, they will be formally informed of their selection, and all other participants in the selection process will be notified by email.
