CREAF is seeking a multi-disciplinary hearted a research technician in biodiversity conservation information and planning, with knowledge of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and the ability to draft technical-scientific documents. This position is in the context of the BIOAGORA project (Biodiversity Knowledge Agora: Developing the Science Service for European Research and Biodiversity Policymaking) with ref. 101059438 funded by European Commission and to be part of the the Catalan representation in Biodiversa + of the Technical Office of the Observatory of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity (OPNB) project and funded by Departament de Territori, Habitatg i Transició Ecologica de la Generalitat de Catalunya.

The hired person will coordinate the different activities promoted by the Observatory in collaboration with various European entities. These activities will be focused on the development of a European-level coordinated biodiversity observation and monitoring system. Coordination activities with Biodiversa+ take place within the broader framework of the joint development of different projects related to biodiversity monitoring and conservation planning at the OPNB.

Biodiversa+ is a European partnership that fosters biodiversity research with social and political impact. It is co-funded by the EU and brings together 81 biodiversity research and conservation institutions with the aim of strengthening the scientific basis of the EU Biodiversity Strategy. The mobilization and harmonization of biodiversity information are key to monitoring and evaluating the objectives of this strategy, and they have become priority goals of Biodiversa+.

The OPNB aims to become a reference in Catalonia for guiding decision-making on all matters related to nature. Its mission is to organize, integrate, process, and disseminate all available information on Catalonia’s natural heritage, to act as a meeting and participation forum for entities conducting scientific research in this field, and to provide access to individuals and groups who need this knowledge to carry out their activities.

The management of the OPNB, coordinated through its Technical Office, is the responsibility of the technical staff of the Directorate-General competent in environmental and natural heritage policies, the Forest Science and Technology Centre of Catalonia (CTFC), and the Centre for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF).

A full-time contract is offered (37.5 hours per week) with planned incorporation in January 2026. It will last at least 12 months, with the possibility of extending it if required and if the budget allows. The offered salary is €29,157.43 gross per year (corresponding to category T3B).

MAIN FUNCTIONS:

  • Coordination of the activities led and participated in by the OPNB within Biodiversa+, in the field of biodiversity observation and monitoring systems.

  • Participation in the processes of collecting, integrating, and analyzing information on biodiversity monitoring and indicators in Catalonia.

  • Support in drafting the implementation reports for Articles 12 and 17 of the Birds Directive and the Habitats Directive, as well as other European commitments related to natural heritage.

  • Preparation of technical documents (technical reports on completed tasks, working documents, dissemination materials, etc.).

  • Collaborative work within the Technical Office.

  • Attendance and support at technical project meetings, and liaison at both the Catalan and European level on the afore mentioned topics.

  • Any other duties or tasks that, by their nature, may be assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Degree on a topic related to the current project description preferably in the field of life sciences: Biology, Environmental Sciences, or Forestry Engineering, or other fields within the environmental sector.

  • Previous experience in drafting technical reports for European initiatives such as Biodiversa+.

  • Previous experience in database management.

  • Knowledge of legislation in the field of biodiversity, natural areas, and Natura 2000.

  • Knowledge of biodiversity monitoring programs and the application of collected information to conservation.

  • Experience in the use of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing (QGIS, MiraMon, or similar).

  • Proficiency in written and spoken English and Catalan.

ASSESSABLE CONDITIONS:

  • Knowledge of new technologies applied to biodiversity monitoring (bioacoustics, cameras, drones, eDNA, etc.).

  • Previous knowledge of the European and global context in biodiversity conservation and monitoring.

  • Advanced knowledge of database management (Python, SQL, Access, etc.).

  • Immediate incorporation into the Technical Office team at CREAF.

  • Integration policy: reserved positions for staff with a recognized disability certificate.

  • Planning and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work in a team.

  • Communication and interpersonal skills (internal and external).

  • Responsible person with a high level of commitment.

SELECTION PROCESS AND CRITERIA:

  1. Admission of candidates: Applicants must apply for the offer and attach the requested documentation, a curriculum vitae in English and a cover letter (maximum 500 words), until October 8th, 2025.   2. Pre-selection: assessment of compliance with the minimum requirements of the job offer.

  3. Selection: evaluation of the pre-selected candidates through scoring based on objective criteria, interviews with a shortlist of candidates, and a proposed exercise.

  4. Final decision: if a suitable candidate is identified, they will be formally informed of their selection, and all other participants in the selection process will be notified by email.
